Case description
Ulvi Tahirov was arrested on 6 December 2024 at his home in connection with the criminal case targeting Meydan TV, a connection Tahirov denies. Police seized a large sum of money from his home. Tahirov claimed the money belonged to his wife, who is a taxpayer with a salary and service contracts. Police held him overnight at the police station and interrogated him without the presence of his lawyer. On 8 December 2024, the Khatai District Court remanded Tahirov for four months under charges of smuggling foreign currency by a group with prior conspiracy. He had not travelled abroad since 2022, which undermines this charge. Nevertheless, in the following months, his pre-trial detention was prolonged several times. On 28 August 2025, investigative authorities amended the charges and included additional crimes, including illegal entrepreneurship, money laundering, tax evasion, and forgery of documents.Tahirov is held in Pre-trial Detention Centre No. 1, where many other political prisoners and journalists have reported facing ill-treatment and inadequate care.1,2,3,4
